While he refused to answer most questions about the close Massachusetts Senate race, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs today acknowledged that President Obama “was both surprised and frustrated” with how hotly contested the Bay State special election has become.

“The president ought to take this as a message to recalibrate how he wants to govern, and if he wants to govern from the middle we’ll meet him there,” said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

Democratic fingerpointing began more than a week ago as polls started showing a tight race, with the White House accusing Coakley of a poor campaign and the Coakley camp laying at some of the blame on the administration. Obama flew to Boston for last-ditch personal campaigning on Sunday.

The Democrats Who Deserve Blame for Their Loss in Massachusetts

A shift in the political landscape from just one year ago: That’s what AP national political reporter Liz Sidoti sees after last night’s Republican win in the Massachusetts Senate race to fill the vacant seat of Ted Kennedy.

Of course there is much more to the race: Politics and platforms and personal connections are important. But didn’t Obama for America teach us that the Web has the power to push a candidate over the top? Obama also showed the importance of young people (whose communications of choice is digital).

SARAH PALIN, FORMER GOVERNOR OF ALASKA, FOX NEWS CONTRIBUTOR (Via telephone): Oh, this is — this is huge. You just witnessed a wicked political pivot across our country, and I think this victory of Brown’s can’t be overstated — not just Brown, too, but look at the recent developments in New Jersey and Virginia, now Massachusetts. This is a tidal wave that’s sweeping the country that’s telling politicians in D.C. the status quo is not acceptable.

Senior presidential adviser David Axelrod and White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs are rejecting the notion that the stunning Scott Brown upset in the Massachusetts Senate race was a voters’ rebuke to the president’s policies.

1-15-10 Tea Party Movement- a report- how DC bluebloods may destroy the tea party movement

1-15-10 Tea Party Movement- a report

The strongest resistance to Barack Obama’s sweeping plans of fundamentally changing America has been the growing Tea Party Movement.  Is the attempt by elitists and established blue bloods, such as Patrick Ruffini and Dan Quayle, destroying the tea party movement?  Ralph Benko has exposed Patrick Ruffini’s designs for the tea party movement, to co-opt their energy, and then herd them into the GOP order.  Dan Quayle echoed that theme on Neil Cavuto this week.

The divide growing between grassroots activists and their wanna-be top-down DC handlers is becoming increasingly more important.  Here is the state of the tea party movement on the blogosphere:

1-15-10- Patrick Ruffini slams tea party movement- parcbench

The Apostasy: “Drop Dead, Tea Partiers!”

Ruffini’s contribution to this debate centered on why movement activists should — must — be reduced to minion status after victory.  Ruffini weighed in with A Belated Response to Micah Sifry.

Ruffini:

Indeed, it’s easy to dismiss Sifry’s ideal of autonomous, almost leaderless political movements as essentially incompatible with the work of government.

Ruffini:

The job of a campaign is not to transform the ethos of governance.

Ruffini:

Now, what happens when the campaign goes away? What happens when the enthusiasm inevitably ebbs and the hard work of governing begins? The immediate benefits of a bottom-up strategy become less clear. You revert to traditional instincts, where powerful obstacles stand in the way of getting things done — even amongst your base, and the wielding of massive political machinery cannot be left to amateurs.

“Cannot be left to amateurs?”  This is pretty conventional Political Insider thinking, as it happens. What makes Ruffini’s apostasy shocking is his departure from a short but notable career of cheerleading for a bottom up, open-source ethos in politics.  We now see that to Ruffini “bottom up” is a great, one could say Machiavellian, campaign tactic,  “… not simply a noble, unconventional, damn-the-consequences move. It’s pretty darn profitable, generating more signups, more activity, and more money to feed the top-down

If anything, it marks the Tea Party’s move to the center of the conservative movement. Last year, the first round of Tea Parties were held at the same time as CPAC — the D.C. Tea Party was held a few miles down the road.

Moreover, the Tea Party movement has shown broad appeal beyond the fringe of right-wing extremism. While only 28 percent and 35 percent of Americans have a positive view of the Republican and Democratic Parties,

‘The Tea Party Movement Is About To Be Hijacked’: Activists Slam

4 days ago by Zachary Roth
In the latest sign of rancor in Tea Party circles, a convention aiming to bring together conservative activists from across the country is being attacked by some Tea Partiers as inauthentic, too expensive, and too tied to the GOP.
