Today, protestors and basiji clashed once again across Iran following the
death of a reform cleric, Hossein Ali Montazeri. Here is our look at
yesterday’s events and what they mean to the unfolding green revolution of Iran.
Reaction to the Guardian
story yesterday, alleging that Chinese negotiators “intentionally”
embarrassed Barack Obama and sabotaged the Copenhagen talks, turns out to be a
Rorschach test for views on a variety of issues. Views of China (inherently
untrustworthy); views of the US and the West (inherently biased against rising
China); views of Obama (ludicrously out of his depth in dealing with the
Chinese); views of man-made climate change and big international conclaves like
this (big frauds in both cases).

Colombia’s civil conflict spans more than four decades and has drawn in
left-wing rebels and right-wing paramilitaries.
Here are profiles of the three main armed groups
The Farc is the oldest and largest group among Colombia’s left-wing rebels - and
is one of the world’s richest guerrilla armies.
NATIONAL LIBERATION ARMY (ELN)
The left-wing group was formed in 1965 by intellectuals inspired by the Cuban
revolution.
UNITED SELF DEFENCE FORCES OF COLOMBIA (AUC)
This right-wing umbrella group was formed in 1997 by drug-traffickers and
landowners to combat rebel kidnappings and extortion.

BEIJING - A high-profile Chinese dissident accused of subversion was tried at a
two-hour hearing Wednesday that shut out foreign diplomats concerned over a case
that reflects the communist government’s deep suspicion of calls for political
reform.
Liu Xiaobo was detained a year ago, just before the release of an
unusually direct appeal for more civil rights in China he co-authored calledCharter
08, signed by scores of China’s top intellectuals. He faces up to 15 years
in jail. The verdict is due Friday.
NEW DELHI (Reuters) -
The grouping of China, India, Brazil and South Africa has emerged as a
significant force in Copenhagen and they could lead the way in future
negotiations, the head of the U.N. climate panel said on Wednesday.
“What has happened politically which is very significant is the emergence of
this grouping of Brazil, South Africa, India and China,” Rajendra Pachauri,
chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said in New
Delhi.
“Undoubtedly whatever agreement comes into existence by the time Mexico
completes its conference of the parties, will necessarily have to deal with the
power of this group (BASIC).”
