6-14-9 World News- Iranian Elections 2009

The Iranian Elections are turning into something altogether unexpected.  They come at the tail end of this week’s news, so the bulk of this story’s immediate effects on Iran in the world will unfold over the next week.  But we wanted to touch base on these elections.  Here is an article which details, to some degree, the struggle emerging between the a-jad and mousavi camps.

“Thousands of people clashed with police after the disputed election victory of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sparked the biggest protests in Tehran since the 1979 Islamic revolution.”

From ABC’s Jim Sciutto: “inside the protests tonight, if you support ahmadinajad, no police, you criticize him, get pepper spray, tear gas, batons… Anti-govt protests have spread to other Iranian cities, incl Rasht… We witnessed police spraying pepper gas into the eyes of peaceful female protesters… Two worlds in Tehran tonight. Support Ahmadinejad, free rein. Oppose him, risk police attacks, tear gas, batons..

Its impact on the week ending 6-14-9 can be summarized as unexpected.  Had Mousavi won, or had been declared the winner, the concern amongst some was that a more moderate voice would not match the continued extreme ‘belligerence’ of Iranian foreign policy, but the rest of the world would be lulled by his victory.

Had A-jad won, nothing would have changed.

But given the events which have already taken place, whether the upheaval is quickly addressed or not, the instability of Iran may factor in favor of a more aggressive interjection from the world to stop Iran from getting nuclear missiles.

The big winner in this week’s election was the Christian Democrat Party, winning 36.75 of the vote.

“The EPP is the political family of the centre-right, whose roots run deep in the history and civilization of the European continent and has pioneered the European project from its inception”

What is the European Project?

according to this article from feata.org:

http://www.feasta.org/documents/democracy/storey.htm“The European Project (is) Dismantling Social Democracy, Globalising Neoliberalism”

The article is actually an attack on a critical piece called “Is Ireland a Democracy”, attacking the whole centre-right movement in Europe as being a kinder, more well-disguised form of globalism and international controls.
